Exchange tanks you get at your local gas station or garden center are only filled to 15 pounds of propane which is almost a gallon less than a propane refill from us. Also many exchange tanks are used tanks which have been spray painted several times over to hide rust and other troubling defects which can become unsafe.

Propane safety is our top priority
Finding an old propane tank behind the shed or stuck in the corner of your garage isn't an uncommon theme that we hear of. But before you drag in that old tank with high hopes of having it filled, there are a couple of things you should know. The first of which is propane tanks need to be re-inspected every 5 years, after they have become 12 years old. Old tank valves are the first failure point in tanks as they age and the second issue is that the old valves are not to be used in tanks ranging in size from 5 pounds up to and including 40 pound tanks. 100 pound tanks (food truck tanks) are exempt from this, however the tank still has to be in good shape and the valve has to be in good, working condition.
If you find that you still have an old tank kicking around, please note that they can not be thrown in the regular garbage and please DO NOT try and pull off a fast one by placing it in a black bag and burying it in your tote with hopes that the tank is not seen and have it make it's way into the garbage truck. That is EXTREMELY UNSAFE and someone can get killed by doing that. Drop the tank off to us for proper tank disposal.
